Performance Designs' Katana is a high-performance canopy designed for experienced canopy pilots. The Katana has been described as “a perfect fit between the Stiletto and Velocity,” and a canopy that is “very suited to modern flying styles.” Like the PD Stiletto, the Katana is a highly tapered or “elliptical” nine-cell canopy made from zero-porosity fabric. Both the Stiletto and the Katana were designed using a conventional cell structure, without cross-braces or airlocks™ . The Katana may look similar to a Stiletto at first glance, but beneath the surface they are two completely different machines. “……I love the way the Katana dives. The front riser pressure starts off very light, and tends to build up slowly. It is easy to keep the Katana in a front riser dive or diving turn, and to make adjustments to your turn rate and rate of descent while diving. The Velocity is intended only for very experienced pilots who have already flown a small elliptical canopy for several skydiving seasons, and consider themselves very current and very proficient. If this doesn't describe you, keep jumping and keep learning, but stay away from the Velocity, especially if it's a smaller canopy than you're used to. If you decide to go for it, we suggest you make several solo jumps on the Velocity opening above 6000 feet, or higher if it's a small one. This should give you the freedom to really explore the canopy unencumbered by other traffic.

The Velocity has the largest flight speed range of any canopy ever jumped. It is an absolute blast to fly. It responds very quickly to toggle, riser, or harness movements, and feels very "connected" to your body. Its cross-braced structure makes it feel very rigid. The swoops on a Velocity are the longest we've seen from any canopy, especially when using a smooth aggressive approach. The Velocity lands great, even at the maximum placarded wing loading, after a normal straight-in approach without front risers. There should be no problem using very conservative straight-in approaches in the beginning, especially if you've done a few recently on your present canopy of similar size. The flight performance information below assumes the canopy size is the same as what you're used to. Obviously, things happen much faster than described when down sizing.

Performance Designs, Inc. introduces the Slink (Soft link):
The result of more than a year of development and testing, Performance Designs introduces a totally new design for a reusable soft link. (The PD Slink Pat. Pend.)

The PD Slink is the first soft link ever approved by the FAA for use with reserve parachutes!

After more than a year in development and testing, Performance Designs has released a new, patented design for a reusable soft link.

Why soft links?

They can reduce potential damage to the slider grommets, thereby extending the life span of suspension lines. They allow the jumper to pull the slider over the risers and toggles more easily and they do not require the use of slider "bumpers". No current designs met all of our criteria.

Some of the problems encountered with other designs included: low breaking strength, inconsistent manufacturing techniques, installation requiring tools and/or rigging facilities, removal required destroying the links, riser modification required for use, etc. Some soft link designs even incorporate metal parts... Finally we decided to design and build our own...

There were many issues to be addressed in the project:

• Soft link strength and reliability.
• Soft link construction methods, not to include any metal parts (a true soft link).
• Compatibility with various riser/suspension line combinations (without modification).
• Ease of installation.
• Must be reusable.

The tests:

Performance Designs was not satisfied with releasing our new soft links unless we were absolutely confident in their reliability. We therefore put them through a grueling series of tests including:

• Destruction testing where we pulled the riser/slink/suspension line systems to failure.
• Destruction testing where we subjected the system to rapid onset, high "g force" loadings, up to and beyond the system failure point. This included shock loadings of over 75 g's (12,000 lbs. 4 riser system), utilizing both sport and tandem risers and suspension lines.
• High speed, heavy load, drop tests from a B-25 bomber. These tests are the same tests that are performed on Performance Designs' reserves, in order to meet TSO approval requirements.
• Long term wear testing, on canopies jumped in the field, over an extended time period. This included frequent removal and re-installation of the links tested.

In the tests performed, the Performance Design's Slink survived at loadings beyond the suspension lines and/or riser!

In our testing, the failure point of the system was repeatedly the suspension lines or the webbing attaching the three rings to the riser. In comparison tests, the PD reserve soft link survived tests that caused failures and/or severe damage to #4 and #5 stainless steel links! The PD Soft links not only survived these tests, but showed no signs of damage.

Based upon the results of these extensive tests, Performance Designs is the first manufacturer ever to receive FAA 'TSO' approval for a soft link for use on reserve parachutes!

The Performance Designs Slink is available in two configurations:

• One for main canopies
• One for sport reserves and/or tandem main canopies.

The PD Slink is now available as an option on all new Performance Designs canopies at no additional charge. They may also be purchased in sets of 4 (with installation instructions).
